Mainstream media or social media may be a good source to discover Malaysia, however, nothing beats the actual experience of exploring the place with your own two feet. “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust
A journey typically starts and ends at the same point — our humble home. This is the same for any voyage of discovery –– when we reach out, we gain new insights, and when we reach within, we are often rewarded by priceless epiphanies that only come after some gruelling introspective soul-searching. After years of backpacking across the globe, I finally realised that it was time for me to go back to the beginning, to start exploring my own land, Malaysia.
Throughout this journey of tiny townships and unbeaten paths, the people and sights that I encountered have moved me deeply; each unforgettable memory weaved into every one of my stories. One character that made such an impact in my early journeys was a gentleman from Pandai Pandak, a Malay kampong in Terengganu. He had asked me curiously, “How did you come upon our village? There’s nothing special here and we don’t get many visitors.” We had found each other mutually amusing, and I carefully explained that I had been drawn to the village’s rustic charm and serenity. His eyes sparkled when he heard that. “Thank you for loving our small town. We are really glad to have you and you are always welcome to visit anytime,” he said warmly. That heartfelt remark was enough reason for me to return to that charming countryside again and again. It is genuine interactions like these that triumph over tourist gimmicks anytime.
In my subsequent travels across Malaysia, I discovered many more endearing places just like Pandai Pandak. The words of that old gentleman often came to mind too, inspiring me to delve into the forgotten treasures of our country and to bond with people of all cultures and backgrounds. His warmth will always remind me of the kindness and solidarity that is severely lacking in our urban society. I was blessed to have met many kind souls along the way – their warmth has certainly melt away my cold armour of aloofness and apathy; their sincere smiles, living proof of the fabled Malaysian hospitality that I had long ago dismissed as a myth. Such happy discoveries have once again restored my faith and hope in our country.
However, not all is rosy in our beloved homeland. We are held back by our lack of civic-mindedness and environmental awareness, our nature and natural resources are plundered by selfish individuals and greedy organisations, and our potential to grow is stunted by incompetent local authorities. This naïve belief that we can control our fragile environment and many other regressive ideas are clouding our perception. We need to face these ugly truths in order to fix them. We need to put ourselves in the shoes of others, to treat their hometowns as if they’re our own, to forge a bond and unite as one to make Malaysia a better place.
This book offers an alternative perspective into Malaysia. You’ll begin to discover many unfamiliar parts of our homeland and encounter landscapes and sights you never would have believed existed in our country. I am confident that you’ll see the land through new eyes and love her and understand her more, just like I did. It is with hope that my travel adventures will inspire you to experience our homeland more and connect you to the lives that make up our amazing nation.
Mine is a never-ending voyage of discovering Malaysia. Would you like to come along for the ride, my friend?
